People without disaster survival kits will be the first to venture out to the stores in times of crisis. Most people will fall into this category. Essential items like water, milk and bread will be ripped off the shelves quickly. Batteries and even candles and matches will all be bought up in a hurry. Rioting could be a real problem, so the owner of the store will have to limit the number of items each person can buy. Lines might stretch for blocks. Even if there are a hundred bottles of water on the shelves, there may be 200 people who want them.

We are living pretty much in a cashless society. People use credit cards, checks and debit cards. If you lose power in a disaster, you can be sure that stores have lost it also. Depending on the type of disaster, stores may not be damaged too badly, and their merchandise may not be damaged, in that case the owner might even be able open the store. Assuming the products are not broken or haven’t spoiled, you could buy them. Well, you could try to buy them at least. Unfortunately, the store owner can’t swipe your credit card or debit card through his machine. You may have checks, but the owner isn’t set up to deal with them either when the electric is out. That’s alright because you feel good with three $100 dollar bills in your pocket. Sadly, the electric cash register will not be working. You may be able to buy whatever you want with your hundreds, but you won’t get any change. Other casualties of the electric outage are ATM machines, they won’t give you smaller bills. Therefore, it is important to stock up on cash for your disaster survival kit. Make it twenties, tens, fives, singles and some small change.

Too many people and not enough supplies, no gasoline and your family waiting for you to bring dinner home. Dinner, what dinner? Depending on the type of disaster, it could be days or even weeks before new supplies can be brought into stores.

For your family and for yourself, begin stocking up now, a minimum of a months worth of the necessities. Even better would be a 3 month supply of the essentials if something were to happen to a major power station. Your actions now will give you peace of mind in the future. You should not be worried about the costs of your survival supplies for two reasons. One, when you buy in bulk for an extended survival time means that you will get a better per item price than buying one at a time. And two, you can use the items you purchase as long as you replace them. This replacement method has an added benefit of making sure your supplies are safe and usable when they are needed.

Pre-made survival kits are very handy in times when emergency response might be only days away. Visit http://www.buydisastersurvivalsupplies.com/survivalsupplies for more information.

By Phil Washington
Answer this as honestly as you can: can you survive an emergency with just your bare hands? Probably not. Most of us will require a weapon, a device or some gear of sorts in order to protect ourselves. It’s a good thing that prepackaged survival tips are now being sold freely by retailers both online and off. With these kits, you’ll have better chances of living through an emergency. These advantages will explain why you need to buy one today:

You never know when you’ll need a survival kit

A prepackaged survival kit comes complete with the kind of tools you’ll find very useful during an emergency. Having one means you’ll be ready for any situations that will require you to act quickly

There’s no need to build a kit yourself

Most civilians and homeowners are not really familiar with the basic tools and equipment required to make a survival kit. When people are asked what tools they’ll need for survival, they’ll probably think an old Army knife would do. Probably?but it’s not always complete. For example, in a survival kit, you’ll find items you’ll probably never consider taking with you, such as fish hooks, flint or tinder, a poncho, mosquito net, hat, water filter and a sewing kit.

Prepackaged survival kits also have the advantage of including tools and equipment that are the right size for travel and better mobility. If you build a survival kit yourself, it’s likely that you will have oversized bottles and other items that won’t fit the basic kit.

You have options regarding which kit to buy to fit your needs

Prepackaged survival kits are put together by companies who rely on the experience and expertise of survival professionals and experts. It’s likely that all you’ll ever need to survive any situation can already be found in one kit.

However, there are also kits that are modified depending on their main use. Survival kits designed for desert areas, for example, contain slightly different tools and equipment than kits designed for use in urban or tropical areas. The contents of a survival kit for a mountain climber will be different from that used by a seafarer, for example, or a hiker.

Prepackaged survival kits are handy

In an emergency, the last thing you want to do is to run from one room to the next to collect your supplies. A prepackaged survival kit contains everything you’ll ever need in one bag or box. During an emergency, you only need to grab one and go.

Items included in a prepackaged survival kit are also listed for easy reference, so they are easy to find and identify.

Prepackaged survival kits have multi-purpose uses

Prepackaged survival kits can be used for travel, adventure, racing, trekking, hiking and even tactical operations. They are as useful as they are lifesaving.

The first thing to do for disaster survival is to check everyone to see if they are injured. If there are people with injuries, you will have to get your own first-aid kit.

You will have to think ahead about any possible injuries in advance so you can be prepared. Keep some Bacitracin ointment or Neosporin on hand to treat cuts or scrapes to help prevent infection. Menstrual pads or 4×4 gauze pads could be used on larger cuts. Large wounds may require you to stitch it your self if medical help can not reach your in time. Although you could take an on line CPR or first aid certification course, try making time to attend one personally near you.

Is your home safe?

Your home could have been extensively damaged in some disasters. After the initial disaster hit, if you are not sure if your house is safe then remain outside. Visually inspect the floors, ceilings and walls of your home to get some idea of the stability of the building. Visible small cracks should not cause major problems. Huge cracks, broken beams or holes in the floor are also signs of serious structural damage.

The Clean-up

Remember, take care of injuries first, then make sure the building you are in is stable, only then should you consider clean up. Broken glass, broken plates and shattered ceramics are sources of additional potential injuries, clean them up first. Depending on the type of disaster, there may be aftershocks or additional explosions so remove any breakables off shelves. Make you and your family as comfortable as possible, and be sure to have your survival kit nearby for food and water.

Neighborhood Safety

If you don’t already have a battery operated radio or a solar powered one, get one now. Tune to the emergency broadcast stations in your area to find out what is happening around you and the status of rescue efforts. Being able to find out the status of what the authorities are doing to help can be comforting to you and your family. The water may or may not be safe or hazards like looting may be occurring nearby, you will hear it first on the airways. The radio will keep you apprised of the local conditions and efforts.

If you don’t hear warnings problems with the water supply, be sure to clean out the bathtub, rinsing it well, and fill it – the water could be shut off at any time. Potable water is essential, so gather all the buckets and bottles you can clean and fill them also. Doing this will ensure water for the short term. In the long term you will need a survival kit that contains water purification. Replenishing your body’s water is necessary. You can go without food for weeks or even months but without water even just a day and your survival will be in desperate straights.

Safeguarding Your Family

In the face of a disaster, most people will reach out to others and help. They will band together against the common problems. Nevertheless, there are people who want to take advantage of the disaster by looting. In a short term disaster survival scenario, looting may be limited to stores with food or resalable merchandise.

Some disasters may last for weeks. The unprepared could begin to threaten you and your family as they seek food and water. You will need some type of defense against others who have not prepared themselves and are looking for food or water. You may want to have some type of weapon on hand for a disaster emergency. Guns work but are dangerous and can be turned against you. Arming yourself should also mean additional training for you in firearm usage and safety. Guns may not be your solution, mace or pepper spray work, a simple baseball bat can level the biggest bully.

Safety first, first aid preparedness and how you will survive, depends on your planning. Do it now!

Let’s use a hurricane for an example though many of the following steps are used for any type of catastrophe.

The hurricane season in the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean last lasts from
June to November. You should have your plan in place well before the start of the season.

• Begin by putting together a family disaster supply
kit which includes the necessities water, food, clothing. Also include basic tools, first aid supplies and any prescription medications you take.

• Have a supply of all of these items for everyone in your family to last a minimum of 3 to 5 days, preferably longer.

• Do not forget to include the phone numbers of your family members, schools, insurance companies, and emergency services provider phone numbers.

• Put in either the originals or copies of important documents
in a waterproof case you can call the American Red cross for a complete checklist.

• Keep a flashlight handy for every member of the family with plenty of extra batteries. New, small LED flashlights are very bright and use less power.

• Avoid using candles– they can cause fires.

• Have a battery powered radio or TV available. FEMA or Homeland Security will issue regular bulletins to local TV and radio through the Emergency Alert System and through news papers.

• A supply of canned food with a manual can opener, is a must to have on hand. Have a standard phone available because phone lines my still be available.

• Have plenty of spare water containers available for drinking
cooking and washing. Fill your bathtub.

• Plan to help both neighbors and relatives who are older or have special needs.

• Notify your utility company and let them know if there is someone in your family who uses life support equipment.

• Make arrangements for pets, either to board them or to have a save location with plenty of extra food or water prior to any catastrophe. If you have to evacuate to a shelter, many of them do not allow animals.

• Review your homeowners insurance polices now.

• Take photos of your items to help with your insurance claims.

• If you live in a low lying area consider getting flood insurance.

Here are some additional actions to take when it appears that a hurricane may hit your community. Under a hurricane watch a hurricane may threaten your area within 36 hours, so don’t hesitate!

Fuel up your vehicle.
Bring all outdoor items indoors, garbage cans, lawn furniture
Get cash especially small bills and change.
Monitor local broadcasts about the status
If a hurricane warning is issued expect winds of up to 75 miles an hour, dangerously high water along coast lines, bays and rivers and very rough seas
Have materials available to protect your windows and doors
Unplug major appliances and sensitive equipment like TVs and computers to minimize damage if power is lost and then restored.
When the hurricane strikes go to an interior windowless room with your disaster supply kit.

But remember if local officials advise you to evacuate, do so immediately don’t wait until the last minute.

If you are evacuating, close all windows and interior doors before leaving.
Turn off water at the main valve and electricity at the main circuit breaker.
If you have natural gas contact your local gas company about shutting it off.

Stock Your Medications in Your Survival Kit

If you take regular medications be sure to have sufficient quantities of them for a long time. Additional medications that you will want to add to your survival kit may be needed. Aspirin works for most fevers, and minor aches and pains, ibuprofen is for inflammation like swollen joints. Additional over the counter medications you should have on hand are Kaopectate for diarrhea, and Pepto Bismol for stomach maladies.

Earthquake Damage

Have an unbreakable thermometer in your kit. With the added stress and a limited diet, be sure to have vitamin supplements in your kit also. Look for energy boosting and fatigue fighting natural supplements like B12, or ginseng. Sugar and caffeine abound in energy bars and drinks. use them cautiously. If someone eats something tainted you will want to induce vomiting Ipecac syrup will do the trick. Ask your doctor if he would allow you to have an extra months worth of any regular prescription medications you are taking.

Natural Antibiotics

It is doubtful that you will be able to get any type of pharmaceutical antibiotics prior to a disaster. Stocking up on antibiotics by not taking all of the prescription you doctor gives you is a bad idea. This is a foolish way of amassing antibiotics and could be dangerous to your health.

Instead, check out natural antibiotics. A place to start learning about natural herbs is “Herbal Remedies Secrets” an ebook filled with information on the natural healing powers of herbs. It is a wealth of knowledge on how to grow and brew your own herbs and what herbs are used to treat individual conditions

In conclusion, when disaster strikes, don’t neglect your health, it could mean the difference between life or death. Without a survival plan and a survival kit which includes both prescription medications and natural cures, you may not be able to survive a disaster. And finally, educate yourself on how to take care of yourself and your family members in an emergency.
